Petit reptile saurien, vivant dans les régions chaudes, à la tête massive et aux doigts garnis de lamelles adhésives. Synon. tarente. Le nombre des doigts et leur mobilité varient plus dans les reptiles que dans toutes les autres classes. Les lézards ordinaires en ont généralement cinq de diverses longueurs (...) d'autres, comme le gecko, les ont revêtus en dessous d'écailles tuilées (CUVIER, Anat. comp., t. 2, 1805, p. 588).
